The Exorcist is In

Este es un dibujo hecho para el Concurso "Mafalda y la Sopa", organizado por . Con GRAN gusto y orgullo he de decir que... ¡GANÉ! ¡Muchísimas gracias a todos los miembros que votaron por mi humilde caricatura! ¡todos ustedes son GENIALES! (aquí pueden ver las demás entradas al concurso: son todas buenas, ¡así que chequéenlas! )

Aquí Mafalda nos demuestra como un verdadero exorcista lidea con un plato de sopa maldecido (bueno, esto seguramente no es ninguna sorpresa para los fanáticos de la tira, pero considero que para ella cualquier plato de sopa hubiese entrado en esa categoría). El rostro de frustración de su muy paciente madre, Raquel, no deja de dar risa: digamos que hay cosas de los hijos que sólo los padres pueden pasar. Y difícilmente...
Y por si acaso: el hombre del cuadro torcido no es otro que Joaquín Salvador Lavado en persona, alias Quino (creador de Mafalda). Esa partedel dibujo no es más que una copia de un "autorretrato-caricatura" suyo que encontré en el libro "Toda Mafalda".

Sobre Mafalda y su odio por la sopa se ha hablado mucho: numerosos ejemplos de este chiste continuado se dieron a lo largo de la décana que Quino dibujó a nuestra heroína a diario (Aquí les van algunos de los mejores: [link] [link] [link] y probablemente el más famoso: [link]). Aunque comparto muchos de sus odios (como el racismo y la arrogancia), a mí siempre me gustó la sopa.

Y para aquellos en la audiencia que no "capten" la referencia en el dibujo: en la película "El Exorcista", el demonio Pazuzu forzó a la poseía Reagan, en medio de convulsiones atroces, a gritar el nombre del Padre Merrin (clamaba por aquel que lo había derrotado antes, en un exorcismo anterior en África).
Por alguna razón (y conste que ví esta película cuando era un niño) aquella parte me pareció especialmente aterradora e impactante. "¿Quién sabe?" - me preguntaba "¿Y si el Demonio me está esperando en alguna parte?". Definitivamente no es la mejor película para ver si tienes 10 años...

Here Mafalda demonstrates us how does a true exorcist deal with a cursed soup dish (the again, I'm pretty sure she wouldn't have hesitated to classify every and each soup dishes in that category. I know this doesn't come a surprise to any fan of the strip!). Her very patient mom (Raquel)'s face makes me giggle to no end, though: let's just say there are some things about children only their parents can be bothered to tolerate. And hardly...
And for your information: the man in the crooked picture is no one else but Joaquín Salvador Lavado himself, aka Quino (Mafalda's creator). That bit of the picture's nothing but a copy of a "caricaturesque self-portrait" I found in his book "Toda Mafalda".

Much has been said in regard to Mafalda and her intense hatred towards soup: numerous examples of this running gag appeared during the decade Quino drew our heroine on a daily basis (here are some of the best "soup" strips he produced: [link] [link] [link] and more famously: [link]). While I do share many of her pet-hates (things such as racism and arrogance), I always liked soup.

And for those in the crowd who didn't get the reference: in the movie "The Exorcist", the demon Pazuzu forced the possessed and convulsing Regan to scream out Father Merrin's name (he called out for him, who defeated him before in a previous exorcism in Africa).
For some reason (and please take into account I saw this movie for the first time when I was a kiddo) I found that part specially scary and disturbing. "Who knows?" - I wondered back then "If the Demon is calling out for me somewhere?". It's definitely not the best movie to see when you're but a 10 years old boy...
